SNPhA Initiatives

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Operation Immunization

Chair: Oyinade "Bimpe" Adepoju

Goals as CKD chair center around organizing and coordinating CKD events in the university and public community to promote awareness about this disease. It is important to provide information about prevention, management, and treatment of the disease in a way for the public to have easy access and bridge the gap of the health disparities in CKD. In addition to particpating in monthly conference calls, I will be hosting a donation challenge event with the helping of the American Society of Transplantation.

Chair: Stephanie Hill

Goals for this year is to increase awareness about the importance and safety of vaccines. We hope to increase access to receiving the influenza vaccine by hosting a flu clinic at UNE.

Legislative Initiative

Chair: Michaela Myerson

A large part of being a pharmacist is knowing about new and amended laws coming into practice. Along with creating resolutions for the Regional and National level, we keep our chapter up to date with laws coming into practice. We also educate minority and underserved communities about registering to vote and assist in filling out Citizenship paperwork.

Project Fight Diabetes

Chair: Elsie Morgan

Main goal during Diabetes Awareness Month is to educate the campus on not only what diabetes is, but also the struggles one living with diabetes might face.  Further plans include education on the use of insulin pumps and the therapies on the forefront of diabetic treatment.

UNE Chapter Initiatives

Remember the Ribbon

Power to End Stroke (PTES)

Mental Health Awareness

Chair: TBD

The main goal of PTES is to educate our community on the prevalence of stroke and increase awareness on the signs and symptoms, as well as how to prevent it through lifestyle changes. As the 5th leading cause of death in the US, it is important to bring awareness about stroke to the underserved and provide them with information that could potentially save someone’s life. To achieve this goal, our committee will have informational events in the community where we can provide education on stroke signs and symptoms, along with counseling of modifiable risk factors such as blood pressure, diabetes and smoking cessation.

The HIV/AIDS Remember the Ribbon Initiative strives to increase awareness, prevention and education for the HIV epidemic.  Through our advocacy within SNPhA, the initiative focuses on minority communities, particularly those individuals who may not be aware of  the risks, complications, prevention measures and resources available to them in getting tested and managing a positive HIV status.  We also aim to eliminate the stigma of HIV in the community and educate health care professionals on the myths and facts regarding infection with HIV.  Every national HIV awareness day is observed by the initiative to promote continued awareness of how HIV impacts every patient population significantly.  Specific goals for the initiative are to collaborate with an HIV service center in the community, continue to have a presence at outreach events and increase student participation in HIV awareness.

Chair: Courtney Duclos

The Mental Health initiative of UNE's SNPhA is to foster and innovate accessible outreach and anti-stigma tools that start the critical conversations about mental illness in the health care professions and community.  By coming together and increasing our understanding and raising awareness, we can make a difference.

Outreach and Education

Chair: Erica Doubleday & Taylor Fitch

The Outreach and Education Chair serves as the coordinator of SNPhA’s community outreach and educational opportunities. They serve as the Liaison between the Office of Service Learning and the entire College of Pharmacy. We help plan and host events like High School career days, community events like the Boys and Girls Club Festival and health fair opportunities both on and off campus, which allow a chance for the other chairs to provide their great information to populations beyond just the College of Pharmacy. As a new chair position this year, our goal is to continue the events and connections that we have built over the years with local schools and community partners, while also forging new opportunities to serve the greater Portland community and those in it. We want to grow what our chapter can offer, and find new ways to Serve the Underserved!

Smoking Cessation Initiative

Chairs: TBD

Our focus will be on smoking cessation and counseling patients on taking the steps towards quitting smoking through active public outreach and education. In addition, we will host events and present posters to provide the public with general information and statistics regarding smoking and ways to quit.
